An Introduction to Throwing with Porcelain with Jo Davies

Thursday 15 & Friday 16 January 2026

10-4 each day

Where: Cabalva Pottery in Whitney-on-Wye, Herefordshire, HR3 6EX

During this 2 day workshop I will guide you through the first important steps towards throwing with porcelain. This course is for people who may not have worked with this material before but are curious about how to work with this amazing clay and would like to know how to throw with it.

You will gain an insight into the beautiful qualities of porcelain, and how to make a start at harnessing them, but also how to mitigate the problems that can come up when using this material. Above all, I will encourage you to approach porcelain with an open, curious mind in order to put aside anything you might have heard regarding its temperamental reputation. If you know how to approach it then so many of these issues can be overcome and so it’s best to try porcelain in a supported environment with a teacher who knows about porcelain.

We will discuss how to harness the best qualities of porcelain through some simple exercises in throwing and turning.

As a specialist in porcelain ceramics I am highly experienced in this field. I am also a maker who teaches - at all levels - using the expertise gained in my professional practice in order to give insights into the process of working with porcelain.

Cabalva Pottery in Whitney-on-Wye is beautifully located but a little remote so a car or taxi to the venue will be needed. Once you have booked we will send you location information and instructions on the best routes to the pottery.

This session will be taking place in January so please do wear layers. The pottery is heated but it’s best to be prepared for a fresher start!
