3 Day Introduction to Wheel-Throwing Porcelain. 2-4 July
3 Day Introduction to Throwing with Porcelain taught by Jo Davies
Part of the De-Mystifying Porcelain Course
2-4 July 2026
9:30-4:30 each day
Small Class with maximum of 6 students held at Cabalva Pottery in Herefordshire on the Welsh Border.
During this 3 day workshop Jo Davies will guide you through the first important steps towards throwing with porcelain. This course is for people who may or may not have worked with porcelain before but are curious about how to work with it for best results.
It is part of the De-Mystifying Porcelain Course, which has 4 sessions that can be booked as an individual classes or as a series. You can reserve a place on all 4 of the De-Mystifying Porcelain Classes here at a discounted rate or alternatively purchase a place on individual classes.
During this class you will gain an insight into the beautiful qualities of porcelain, how to make a start at harnessing them, but also how to mitigate the problems that can come up when using this material. Jo will encourage you to approach porcelain with an open, curious mind in order to put aside anything you might have heard regarding its temperamental reputation. If you know how to approach it then so many of these issues can be overcome so it’s best to try porcelain in a supported environment with a teacher who knows about the material - Jo has 25 years experience of working with porcelain and uses it exclusively in her practice. She also has extensive experience of teaching others how to use it in the UK and abroad.
We will discuss how to harness the best qualities of porcelain through some simple exercises in throwing and turning, beginning with small cylinders, to bowls to bottle shapes as well as a short project. On the 2/3 day you will be able to trim your pots in order to gain an understanding of the importance of trimming in working with porcelain.
This course will be held at Cabalva Pottery in Whitney on Wye overlooking the Brecon Beacons and is a beautiful place to be for a few days. It’s also very close to the famous market town of Hay-on-Wye, home of the Hay Festival.
