Throwing Thin Porcelain - A guide to making thin, porcelain pots. 7-9 August

Throwing Thin Porcelain - A guide to making thin, porcelain pots. 7-9 August
3 Day - Wheel-Throwing Thin Porcelain taught by Jo Davies
Part of the De-Mystifying Porcelain Course
7-9 August 2026
9:30-4:30 each day
Small Class with maximum of 6 students held at Cabalva Pottery in Herefordshire on the Welsh Border
During this 3 day workshop Jo Davies will guide and support you through demonstrations and individual guidance. This course is for people who may or may not have worked with porcelain before but have some experience of throwing and are curious about how to work with it. This course can be taken as a single workshop or as part of Jo Davies’ De-Mystifying Porcelain group of classes. Some students may find it useful to do one of Jo’s Introduction to Porcelain classes first (see listings on this website).
We will approach the specific issue of throwing more thinly through a series of exercises using simple shapes - cylinders, bowls, etc. - in order to refine this particular approach to working with porcelain and then trim them on the 2/3 day. We will discuss the different ways to create ‘thinness’ using porcelain - through pulling-up more skilfully and/or the subtraction of material at different points in the pot’s making. We will also discuss thinness’ role in the design of the items we’re making and when it’s not a helpful attribute for some designs or when items can be too thin.
By the end, you will gain an insight into the beautiful qualities of porcelain, how to harness them and how to approach throwing more thinly. As with all of the De-Mystifying Porcelain Courses, Jo will encourage you to approach porcelain with an open, curious mind in order to put aside anything you might have heard regarding its temperamental reputation.
Jo Davies has 25 years experience of working with porcelain and uses it exclusively in her practice and has extensive experience of teaching others how to use it.
This small class setting at Cabalva Pottery overlooks the Brecon Beacons on the Welsh Border and is a beautiful place to spend a few days. It is also very close to the famous market town or Hay-on-Wye, home of the Hay Festival.
