4 Day - Wheel-Throwing Large Pieces using Porcelain

Part of the De-Mystifying Porcelain Course

29 Oct until 1 November 2026

9:30-4:30 each day

Small Class with maximum of 6 students held at Cabalva Pottery in Herefordshire on the Welsh Border

By making wheel-thrown components that stack together you will be able to throw pieces that go beyond the maximum quantity you’re able to throw in one to make creative pieces.

During this 4 day workshop Jo Davies will guide and support you through demonstrations and individual guidance. This course is for people who may or may not have worked with porcelain before but have some experience of throwing and are curious about how to work with it. This course can be taken as a single workshop or as part of Jo Davies’ De-Mystifying Porcelain series of classes. Some students may find it useful to do one of Jo’s Introduction to Porcelain classes first (see listings on this website for details).

This course will open up creativity for you by allowing you to imagine and plan shapes and vessels that go beyond the natural confines of personal strength and ability. By breaking down shapes into smaller components you will be able to build shapes that represent your creativity even more.

Jo will guide you through the mapping out and planning of a piece/vessel made up of wheel-thrown component-parts and demonstrate every stage. Jo has designed a shape for students to follow but students are also welcome to discuss approaches to any individual projects and seek help to accomplish these during the course. If you have any questions on this ahead of booking or attending the course then please get in touch with Jo on jo@jo-davies.com

By the end, you will gain an insight into how porcelain can be used in a more free way, how to build with it and use it as a creative material. As with all of the De-Mystifying Porcelain Courses, Jo will encourage you to approach porcelain with an open, curious mind in order to put aside anything you might have heard regarding its temperamental reputation. Proper support and knowledge from an experienced teacher will help overcome any issues that porcelain may turn up.

Jo Davies has 25 years experience of working with porcelain and uses it exclusively in her practice. She also has extensive experience of teaching others how to use it over that time - in the UK and internationally.

This small class setting at Cabalva Pottery overlooks the Brecon Beacons on the Welsh Border and is a beautiful place to spend a few days. It’s also close to the famous market town of Hay-on-Wye, home of the Hay Festival.
