Throwing Tall Porcelain Cylinders. 25-27 September

Throwing Tall Porcelain Cylinders. 25-27 September
3 Day - Wheel-Throwing Tall Cylinders using Porcelain taught by Jo Davies
Part of the De-Mystifying Porcelain Course
25-27 September 2026
9:30-4:30 each day
Small Class with maximum of 6 students held at Cabalva Pottery in Herefordshire on the Welsh Border
During this 3 day workshop Jo Davies will guide and support you through demonstrations and individual guidance. This course can be taken as a single workshop or as part of Jo Davies’ De-Mystifying Porcelain series of classes. This course is for people who may or may not have worked with porcelain before but have some experience of throwing and are curious about how to work with porcelain. However, some students may find it useful to have done one of Jo’s Introductions to Porcelain classes first (see listings on this website).
We will approach the specific issue of throwing clay taller by really getting to grips with the mechanics of how we make the walls of our clay taller through pulling-up by improving technique, starting with smaller pieces of clay all the way through to larger quantities. We will start wherever you currently are and quantities of clay will be modified to suit each individual ability.
We will also look at how to stack component-parts together to make larger pots, using techniques that are still employed in large-scale porcelain studios in South East Asia today. We will approach this on a small scale in order to practice and learn but you will go away with the tools to improve and hone in the future.
You will trim your pots on the 2/3 day in order to finish your projects, add to our skills and give a further appreciation of the role that trimming has in making tall porcelain pieces.
As with all of the De-Mystifying Porcelain Courses, Jo will encourage you to approach porcelain with an open, curious mind in order to put aside anything you might have heard regarding its temperamental reputation. Much of what you learn during this course can also be used with other clays but learning to do this with porcelain will make you a better thrower overall.
Jo Davies has 25 years experience of working with porcelain and uses it exclusively in her practice. She also has extensive experience of teaching others how to use it.
This small class is set at Cabalva Pottery overlooking the Brecon Beacons on the Welsh Border and is a beautiful place to spend a few days. It is also very close to the famous market town of Hay-on-Wye, home of the Hay Festival.
