Small Class sizes, with maximum of 6 students, held at Cabalva Pottery in Herefordshire on the Welsh Border

This set of classes are designed and taught by Jo Davies after extensive experience of teaching students how to throw using porcelain clay. Each class can be seen as a progression from the last but they have also been designed as individual classes that can be taken as stand-alone workshops.

This listing gives you a simple breakdown of each class and the opportunity to purchase a place on 4 of the sessions at a discounted rate. If you would like to purchase just one class then please either go back to the Classes page of the Jo Davies Web Shop to view and buy individual classes.

As the name suggests, these classes are designed to ‘de-mystify’ porcelain, which is a clay that’s often misunderstood by many ceramicists. It can be unfairly blamed as being temperamental for issues that have arisen from user-error and where a few simple changes would make all the difference. A lack of awareness and knowledge about the clay has made it feel like a mystery but during this suite of courses you will learn how to approach it with creativity and a sense of awareness that will help you put everything in place to prevent potential problems with your wheel-thrown pieces.

During these workshops Jo Davies will guide and support you through demonstrations and individual guidance. These courses are for people who may or may not have worked with porcelain before but have some experience of throwing and are curious about how to work with porcelain and how to develop creatively using it.

Each of the above classes can be taken as a single workshop or as a group of classes that will progress through from beginner to intermediate/advanced level. These classes are designed for people who may not have used porcelain before or are becoming familiar with it.

As with all of the De-Mystifying Porcelain Courses, Jo will encourage you to approach porcelain with an open, curious mind in order to put aside anything you might have heard regarding its temperamental reputation. Much of what you learn during these classes can also be used with other clays because learning to work with porcelain will make you a better thrower overrall.

Jo Davies has 25 years experience of working with porcelain and uses it exclusively in her practice. She also has extensive experience of teaching others how to use it in the UK and internationally.

This small class is set at Cabalva Pottery overlooking the Brecon Beacons on the Welsh Border and is a beautiful place to spend a few days. It’s also close to the famous market town of Hay-on-Wye.

£2,200 for all 4 sessions.
